(ITA) Nina Valkhoff è una street artist olandese, che ama ritrarre animali e dipingere elementi botanici. Soprattutto gli animali meno conosciuti o meno apprezzati trovano posto nei suoi grandi murales, per rendere le persone consapevoli della loro esistenza o per vederli sotto una luce diversa.

La sua opera ha avuto un grande impatto sulla comunità locale: la festa di strada improvvisata organizzata dai proprietari del Bolgers Pub, chiuso ormai da diversi anni, ha portato il titolare del locale, musicista, a suonare per strada attirando un vasto pubblico. L’arte si è rivelata uno strumento di coinvolgimento.

In questo murale Nina ha scelto di dipingere il Maned Wolf (Lupo dalla criniera o crisocione), una specie in via di estinzione proveniente dal Sud America i cui segni ricordano quelli della volpe irlandese. Tuttavia non è né una volpe né un lupo: una scelta azzeccata per un murales irlandese che, per quanto riguarda la fauna e la cultura locali, unisce leggenda e natura.

 

REALTA’ AUMENTATA

Il crisocione o lupo dalla criniera è una specie in via di estinzione proveniente dal Sud America i cui tratti ricordano quelli della volpe irlandese.  Questa specie non è né una volpe né un lupo; studi recenti hanno dimostrato che il crisocione non è strettamente imparentato con i canidi diffusi attualmente: rappresenterebbe perciò una delle specie “sopravvissute” dei grandi mammiferi sudamericani del Pleistocene. La lista rossa dell’IUCN lo considera prossimo alla minaccia ma non immediatamente a rischio di estinzione.

(ENG) Nina Valkhoff is a muralist from the Netherlands, who loves to portray animals and paint botanical elements. Especially the lesser known or less appreciated animals will get a place in her big murals, to make people aware of their existence or see them in a different light. 

Her artwork had a great impact on the local community – the impromptu street party organised by the owners of Bolgers Pub – closed now for several years, bringing the owner itself, a musician, to play music on the street attracting a wide public. Art proved to be a tool of community engagement.

In this mural Nina chose to paint the Maned Wolf, an endangered species from South America whose markings resemble those of the Irish fox. However this species is neither a fox nor a wolf, an apt choice for an Irish mural where,  in regards to local fauna and culture, often combines legend and nature.

The Chrysocyon brachyurus or maned wolf is an endangered species from South America whose markings resemble those of the Irish fox. This species is neither a fox nor a wolf; Recent studies have shown that the maned wolf is not strictly related to the currently widespread canids: it would therefore represent one of the “surviving” species of the great South American mammals of the Pleistocene. The IUCN red list considers it close to threat but not immediately threatened with extinction.
